Letter from Catherine Hill, Editor of Foundation
Fort Wayne, Indiana (June 2, 2008) —

Catherine Hill
BODY. MIND. SPIRIT. We’re all seeking the ultimate balance among these three elements of our lives. Among all the great philosophers and poets, I think my daughter’s Barbie® Island Princess sings it best in her syrupy voice: “All the books I’ve read, all the poems that we’ve read, say our hearts are made to share. Joys aren’t found in things such as necklaces and rings, but in love that’s always there.”
Oh my! She’s talking to me! She’s reminding me that balance will never be found if I focus on material things. The secret to finding the balance all comes down to love. While Barbie® may have a hard time balancing, literally, on her tiny purple plastic heels, she has indeed found the figurative balance by knowing that it is in giving that we receive.
Everyone who is part of making the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer a success has (consciously or unconsciously) engaged in the act of finding balance by focusing on the greater good. My friend Beth Goldsmith, a generous donor to the Foundation who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, captured it perfectly when she said, “The Vera Bradley Foundation is so much more than financial contributions. It’s the coming together of the human spirit saying we want to make a difference. We want to make life better for those families touched by breast cancer.”
In my experience, there is no better way to feel balanced and fulfilled in body, mind and spirit, than to give from your heart. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for sharing yours.
