Fort Wayne, Indiana (June 15, 2009) — Research proves that a healthy environment can significantly reduce your chances of contracting any disease, including breast cancer. At Vera Bradley’s corporate offices, we are continually looking for ways to improve morale, health and life in general for our employees. An important step to take in improving your work, home and life environment is to create goals for yourself.
Here are a few tips to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle year round! Think about what would make your environment healthy and happy and write your own plans, too. Here’s to a healthy and incredible year!

Keeping order in your life can limit stress, say health experts.
SEPTEMBER
This month I will step up breast health.
Most clinicians recommend mammograms annually after the age of 40 and before that, if you have a family history of breast cancer. Evaluate your breast cancer risk at cancer.gov.

NOVEMBER
This month I will get better sleep.
Most Americans are short on sleep. One thing you can do is nap. Twenty minutes is all it takes to reap the benefits and reduce health risks, plus improve your attention span.
DECEMBER
This month I will volunteer.

JANUARY
This month I will exercise more.
Register for a breast cancer walk to raise funds for research or participate in any charity fitness event. You’ll be getting exercise as you give back!
FEBRUARY
This month I will keep a positive outlook.
There’s a definite connection between living well and having a healthy lifestyle and having a cheerful outlook on life.
MARCH
This month I will improve stress control.
Reducing stress can help reduce cancer risk, according to numerous studies. Twice a day, breathe deeply for three to
five minutes.
APRIL
This month I will give back.
Giving to charity sparks the ‘feel-good’ center in your brain. Donate to the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer

This month I will protect my skin.
More than 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure. The best way to protect your skin is to apply sunscreen every day, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology.
